Forgiveness means different things to different people.
Forgiving doesn’t mean, let’s pretend it never happened and it’s absolutely NOT condoning or excusing the offender’s behavior, as well as it’s not minimising the wrong or even worse justifying it. Generally, however, it involves a decision to let go so you can move forward!
Here is a process that I walk through with my clients.
Step 1: Acknowledge the event.
Step 2: Acknowledge the feelings associated with the event.
Step 3: Consider how the hurt and pain has affected you.
Step 4: Accept that you cannot change what happened.
Step 5: Determine you will learn from it.
Step 6: Shift the focus to empathy and compassion for yourself or another.
Step 7: Choose to Forgive.
Life is about choices. Choose to forgive, because you deserve to be happy.
